Live for Linux, in plain terms.

Live for Linux is a native Linux player for the Live CMS. It runs on a Linux machine attached to a screen, connects to a cloud-hosted or self-hosted CMS, and plays what is scheduled to it, exactly like the Windows and Android players do.

What makes it worth a page of its own is how rare it is. Digital signage is a Windows and Android category almost everywhere you look, and an organisation that has standardised on Linux endpoints is usually told to make an exception for its screens: buy Windows licences for them, or bolt on Android boxes that nobody in the estate knows how to manage. Live is one of the few platforms where that exception is not required.

That matters most where the endpoint policy is not negotiable. Public sector, universities, research and engineering environments and organisations running a controlled Linux build often cannot introduce another operating system just for signage without a security review they did not budget for. Here the screen becomes one more machine on the build they already ship.

One thing to be straight about: this player is community-supported and under active development, and it does not have the deployment history that the Windows and Android players have. That is the honest trade for a capability the rest of the category does not offer. Talk to the team about roadmap status before you commit a large Linux estate to it.

Which distributions are supported?

Confirm your specific distribution and desktop environment with the team before a large rollout. Because the player is under active development, we would rather check your target build than publish a list that goes stale.

Can we run the whole stack on Linux?

Yes. Live CMS can be self-hosted on your own infrastructure and Linux players can connect to it, so the entire signage stack sits inside your environment. Dedicated self-hosting support is included on the Enterprise plan.

Do other digital signage vendors support Linux?

Very few. Across the competitors reviewed for this site, only a couple were confirmed to support Linux at all, and none maintains substantial Linux-specific documentation. It is one of the genuinely rare capabilities in this category.
